While deciding which beer to brew for Christmas, I came across a kit for the first ever beer I tried. I recall the experience quite vividly. It was in the Chateau, on Wilford Lane in Nottingham (now demolished). Dad was meeting a couple of American businessmen there and for whatever reason, I was with him. I can’t have been older than 12 at the time, maybe a little younger. The bar, if I recall was in the room to the left of the entrance (see the picture). Dad had half a pint of Courage Directors, and I was curious to try some, and he let me have a sip. I remember being pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t at all bad. I am not afraid to say that when I first started drinking beer, it took a little getting used to, and I don’t think that is uncommon. In fact, I had the same thing with mushrooms – to me, an acquired taste. Nonetheless, I love beer now, and that is all that matters!
